Overview
The Fischer Transalp 98 CTI is a downhill-oriented touring ski for strong skiers who want an efficient uphill platform without giving up support on the descent. Its 97–99 mm waist gives useful flotation in soft snow, while the long 19–23 m radius and flat tail suit open terrain and longer turns better than tight, playful lines.
Fischer combines an Ultra Light Woodcore with Air Tec, carbon stringers and a shaped metal inlay. The brand says this blend reduces weight while maintaining torsional stiffness and stability; sandwich sidewalls and a sintered base complete a build intended to stay composed when driven downhill. In the 2027 Ski-Libre test, the ski felt stiff and predictable, with strong stability in long turns and better flotation than its dimensions suggest. The tester found it reluctant to tighten into short turns and less playful than some touring skis.
Choose it for freeride touring when you prioritize descending in open bowls, steep faces and variable snow over quick kick turns or minimum pack weight. The test places its climb weight around the category middle and notes that the flat tail helps conversions. Its firm flex works best with a supportive touring boot; a very light boot may not control it well on the way down. A lighter, shorter-radius ski will suit skiers who want easier kick turns and quicker lines.
Construction & features
What the Transalp 98 CTI is built from, and what that means on snow.
- 01
Ultra Light Woodcore, Air Tec and carbon stringers
Fischer pairs its lightweight woodcore/Air Tec construction with carbon stringers. The manufacturer describes the combination as keeping weight down while retaining torsional stiffness and stability for descents.
- 02
Shaped Ti
A shaped metal inlay follows the ski’s geometry; Fischer describes it as providing stability, grip and a smoother ride.
- 03
Tour Rocker and sandwich sidewalls
Fischer’s Tour Rocker lifts the tip to help the ski pivot and stay composed in softer snow. Sandwich sidewalls carry pressure to the edges for grip on firmer surfaces.
- 04
Flat ski — touring bindings sold separately
This is the ski-only configuration. A compatible touring binding and climbing skins are purchased separately.
